From Intern to Account Director

Jovana Rajacic reflects on agency life at M&C Saatchi PR
and her journey from intern to Account Director.
Challenging. Exciting. Rewarding.
These are the three words I would use to describe my four years spent at M&C Saatchi PR, where I started out as an intern and have worked my way up to Account Director.
Fresh from completing a Master’s degree in International Marketing, I was searching for some real world experience in the communications industry to put theory into practice. My internship was a whirlwind of helping on anything I could get my hands on, including research for pitches and a crash course in sell-ins. Unlike other internships I had done, at M&C Saatchi PR I was immediately thrown into the deep end and entrusted with a level of responsibility I hadn’t expected. For those of you considering internships, I recommend using this time to get to grips with how the teams work, and then work on making yourself indispensable to them.
Agency life at M&C Saatchi PR is incredibly fast-paced and challenging, but it is also immensely rewarding. Thanks in part to a diverse portfolio of clients, no two days are the same which is what keeps the job exciting. The opportunity to progress your career depends entirely on you: how hard you’re willing to work, how passionate you are about the work, and how you adapt to the changing environment around you. No one is going to hand you a promotion, so be prepared to really earn it.
If I’ve learned anything from my time here, it’s to always put your hand up and get involved with as many different areas of the business you can, as you never know what you’re going to like. Some of the best campaigns I’ve worked on were in sectors I never thought I would enjoy. Enthusiasm also goes a long way; you’d be surprised at how noticeable it is to your account leads. Everyone loves someone who is passionate, so don’t be afraid to voice your opinions and have a point of view.
I’ve definitely had some of my best career highlights at M&C Saatchi PR, including launching The House of Peroni residencies and more recently executing an immersive horror-house-meets-escape-room for the new Resident Evil 7 video game. At the end of the day, your career really is what you make of it and I’ve been fortunate enough to grow alongside this passion driven business from intern to Account Director.
